ELIT Language Services chief interpreter was appointed Project Leader of the ISO Working Group entrusted with the drafting of the new International Standard on Conference Interpreting.
This role will be assumed by Haris Ghinos, one of the most experienced conference interpreters in Europe, following a recommendation from the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC).
The Working Group on the new International Standard is under the ISO/TC 37/SC 5 Committee on “Translation, interpreting and related technology”.
The new International Standard being drafted at ISO could be considered as the next milestone in the history of conference interpreting, following the 1945 Nuremberg Trials and the founding of AIIC in 1953.
The year 1945 is considered as the birth date of modern conference interpreting, as the Nuremberg Trials saw the first use of simultaneous interpreting, in four languages.
AIIC, based in Geneva, is the only international association of conference interpreters, with 3,000 members in 90 countries. It is the worldwide custodian of quality in conference interpreting and the official interlocutor of most international organizations.
