International recognition for ELIT Language Services at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The head of ELIT Language Services was appointed Project Leader of the ISO working group tasked with drawing up the new international standard for Conference Interpretation.

This role will be assumed by Haris Ghinos, one of the most experienced conference interpreters in Europe, following a recommendation from the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC).

The working group for the new international standard is operating in the framework of the ISO/TC 37/SC 5 committee on Translation, interpreting and related technology.

The new international standard being drawn up by ISO is regarded the next watershed in the history of conference translation, following the 1945 Nuremberg Trials and the founding of the AIIC in 1953.

1945 is considered the birth date of modern conference interpretation, as the Nuremberg Trials saw the first use of simultaneous interpretation for a four-language session without breaks for interpretation.

The AIIC, founded in 1953 and based in Geneva, is the only international association for conference Interpretation, boasting 3,000 members in 90 countries. It is the arbiter of quality in the sector, recognized by all international organizations as the definitive interlocutor on conference interpretation issues.
